Bow Winding

This gold-mounted bow came in with its original gold winding partially unraveled after the anchoring wire had broken at the pinned hole. The delicate winding had become tangled, and another shop declined the repair because it appeared too fragile to salvage. Rather than replace the original gold wire, the goal here was to carefully unwind, preserve, and reinstall the existing winding; a meticulous process requiring patience, light handling, and precise solder work to restore both ;function and appearance.

  • Secure Remaining Winding: First secure the portion of the gold winding that was still intact.
  • Untangle Carefully: Gently untangle as much of the delicate gold wire as possible while it is still on the stick.
  • Transfer to Spool: Use a temporary spool to carefully wind the gold wire off the bow without stressing or kinking it.
  • Rewind onto Bow: Once fully unwound, begin the process of winding the original wire back onto the bow.
  • Control Tension: Because the wire was extremely thin, avoid heavy tension and instead smooth and guide it into place by hand while winding.
  • Secure the End: After the winding is complete, tape the end to hold it in position.
  • Prepare for Soldering: Wrap a small band of tape near the end of the winding to isolate the solder area.
  • Solder the Band: Solder just the small anchoring band to secure the winding.
  • Thin the Solder: Carefully thin the solder. Normally it is reduced flush to the level of the wire, but in this case extra solder was left to avoid weakening the delicate gold wire.
  • Final Assembly: Replace the grip, rehair the bow, and complete the repair.
