While doing a rehair for a long-term customer, I noticed a significant crack along the underside of the bow. Since the bow was already on the bench, it made sense to take care of the issue right then rather than let it get worse over time. This wasn’t a full restoration, but a quick, practical repair to stabilize the crack, keep the stick in proper shape, and make sure the bow would continue to play reliably after the rehair.
Bow Underside Crack Quick Repair Steps
Protect the stick: Apply a small amount of clear tape to protect the surrounding area.
Prepare clamping pads: Cut small pieces of thin clear plastic to use during clamping.
Work glue into the crack: Carefully apply glue into the crack so it penetrates the joint.
Clean excess glue: Wipe off any excess glue before it sets.
Clamp laterally: Use the thin plastic pieces as a sandwich to apply side pressure and close the crack.
Clamp vertically: Apply vertical pressure to maintain the correct slide shape while the glue cures.
Clean up the surface: The next day, remove clamps and clean up the repaired area.
Blacken the crack: Darken the crack line to help blend it visually.
Seal with CA glue: Apply a thin layer of CA glue to seal and stabilize the surface.
Smooth the repair: Level and smooth the area as needed.
Fill the pearl eye: Add white material to the missing pearl eye area to complete the repair.
