This repair involved an older top crack that needed to be cleaned, aligned, and properly glued to restore strength while maintaining the integrity of the instrument. By opening the lower top seam, the tension on the crack could be relieved, allowing it to close more naturally. After carefully cleaning the joint, hot hide glue was worked into the crack and the area was clamped securely. Once the crack was stabilized, the seams were reglued, and a light protective seal was applied to help shield the repair from dirt and future changes in humidity. Top Crack Repair Steps- Open the lower top seam: Carefully release the seam to relieve tension on the crack and allow it to close properly.
- Clean the crack: Remove any old glue and dirt to ensure a clean bonding surface.
- Apply hot hide glue: Work hot hide glue thoroughly into the crack to ensure full penetration.
- Clamp the crack: Apply firm, even clamping pressure to close and secure the joint.
- Reglue the seams: Once the crack is aligned, glue the opened seams back into place.
- Seal the repair: Apply a light clear seal over the crack to help protect it from dirt and humidity changes.

The right rib was also slightly out of alignment at the lower block, so that area needed to be corrected as well. The back seam was opened and the rib was carefully loosened from the block using a bit of steam, allowing it to be repositioned properly. Once aligned, the rib was clamped back into place and the back seam was reglued. I didn’t take photos of that part of the process, but it’s a fairly straightforward adjustment once the seam is opened and the rib is free to move. |
