Cello Neck Repair | Rebuilding a Failed Neck with Maple Insert

This inexpensive cello came in with a neck that had already been repaired several times, each attempt adding pins and screws until the structure finally gave way. Rather than applying another temporary fix, the goal here was to remove all previous hardware and rebuild the damaged area properly using a fitted maple insert. By resetting the joint, reinforcing it internally, and restoring the correct neck geometry, this repair aims to give the instrument its best chance at long-term stability. 

• Remove Old Hardware: Remove all of the old pins and screws from previous repairs.
• Plug Old Holes: Fill the holes left behind with wooden dowels.
• Glue the Break: Glue the two neck pieces together using rubber bands and a flat surface for alignment.
• Make a Support Mold: Create a mold strong enough to hold the neck securely while the inner area is gouged out.
• Prepare Maple Insert: Fit a piece of maple with the grain running vertically for strength.
• Glue the Insert: Glue the fitted maple piece into the gouged-out area of the neck.
• Trim Excess Wood: Cut off any excess material from the insert.
• Plane to Shape: Plane the repair flat so it matches the neck surface and allows the fingerboard to be glued back on.
• Pin the Insert Ends: Pin the ends of the fitted piece as an added precaution.
• Reattach Fingerboard: Glue the fingerboard back onto the neck.
• Secure to Scroll: As a precaution, pin the fitted piece into the scroll.
• Reglue the Nut: Reglue the nut once the neck structure is complete.
• Restore Neck Shape: Fill any missing wood and refine the neck to its correct shape.
• Final Touch-Up: Finish the repair with light touch-up work.
