Small Violin Rib Crack Repair | Hot Hide Glue and Clamping Method

This repair involved a small rib crack that needed to be properly aligned and glued without causing further distortion to the rib. By opening the back seam, the tension on the crack could be relieved, allowing it to close cleanly. The crack was then carefully cleaned and glued using hot hide glue, while a clear mold matching the rib’s shape was used to keep the curve true. With controlled clamping pressure, the crack could be flattened and secured while the rib was glued back into place at the same time.

Small Rib Crack Repair Steps

  • Open the back seam: Carefully release the back seam to relieve tension and allow the crack to close properly.
  • Clean the crack: Remove any debris or old glue so the joint will bond cleanly.
  • Position a matching mold: Use a clear mold that matches the shape of the rib to maintain the correct curve during the repair.
  • Apply hot hide glue: Work hot hide glue into the crack while also gluing the rib back into position at the same time.
  • Clamp across the rib: Use a bar clamp tightened to the opposing top rib to flatten and close the crack evenly.
  • Secure the rib: Ensure the rib is properly seated and held in place as the glue sets.
